DeLaval cow LED CL6000 and CL9000

In November DeLaval will be taking part in the world’s largest agricultural exhibition EuroTier. A number of new products will be presented for the first time and one of these is the DeLaval cow LED CL6000 and DeLaval cow LED CL9000, commercially available in 2015. This product is the first ever LED light designed specifically for cows integrating research pioneered by this year’s Nobel Prize winners.

Recently the announcement came that the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences had selected this year’s recipients of the Nobel Prize for Physics 2014. The award was given to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura for inventing the energy-efficient and environment-friendly light source, leading to the creation of modern LED light bulbs.

Product Manager at DeLaval, Alfred Kroeger, has been investigating LED illumination for the best part of five years with the intention of creating a product suitable for dairy barns.  According to Alfred it was as late as 2012 that a feasible solution presented itself and it finally made sense to pursue a project that involved LED lighting in the dairy barn environment. “We knew there was a demand for LED dairy barn light fixtures and that this demand was a consequence of the marketing being done.” Alfred explains. “The key selling point of LED has always been linked to energy savings. However the intensity of light needed to illuminate a barn is much greater than what any LED lighting had ever been designed for previously, it didn’t make sense to create such a product as there would have been no energy saving for the dairy farmer and therefore no reason to change from conventional lighting. In 2012 we solved this problem”

The DeLaval cow LED CL6000 and DeLaval cow LED CL9000 is a design not only capable of reducing huge costs on a dairy farm by saving energy but it does so by considering the physiology of the cow. Alfred states that “We know cows perceive light differently from humans, so we designed our product to deliver exactly the right light needed by a cow. Kroeger points out that a fundamental part of creating the DeLaval cow LED CL6000 and DeLaval cow LED CL9000 was making use of the invention of blue LED by the Japanese scientists, “because it meant we were able to design the right mixture of LED lights. After we made these adjustments we found that an energy saving of up to 75% could be made meaning that we could now design dairy barn illumination that offers the same cost savings and energy benefits that LED has always been known for” says Alfred Kroeger.

“I have been following the work around LED for over 4 years. Akasaki, Amano and Nakamura’s invention of blue LED was a great step in the development of illumination” concludes Kroeger.
